Continuing committment to Low Carbon Economy, The recent Autumn Brighton & Hove Business Show 2011 were pleased to team up with FireFly Solar, co-ordinating solar power energy used at the recent Brighton & Hove Business  Show 2011, staged at the Hilton Brighton Metropole Hotel.

Firefly Solar included pedal powered AV for the special events seminar conferencing suite at which speakers from LOCOG – The huge organisation behind the Olympics and Paralympics Games 2012 -  London Olympic Games Organising Committee – and the Intellectual Property Office gave a number of presentations to local businesses by solar powered means.

Brighton & Hove Business and Show management are committed to Low Carbon Economy having worked towards event sustainability 8091.ac.u.k  since 2008 and are maintaining at current events their zero carbon rating.

Our Autumn 2011  Show focuses on improving event travel planning including minimising car journeys

Our aims are to

  • Reduce carbon footprint
  • Reduce the demand for car parking
  • Reduce costs associated with parking provision
  • Reduce the frequency of exhibitors and visitors travelling to the event alone by car
  • Increase travel awareness and promote sustainable travel behaviour
  • Reduce travel costs wherever possible
  • Promote the Shows sustainability policy at all times

Previous carbon footprint

The event management continued to maintain

• zero waste

• maintain same reduced energy levels

The Brighton & Hove Business Show 14 April 2010

1) Reduction of carbon footprint associated with exhibitors and visitors transport

2) Reduction of printed and paper waste left at the venue

3) Reduction of energy consumed at the venue

1) Visitors transport

- visitor car use decreased from 50% to 48%

- visitor increase bus use rose to 16%

- visitor increase walking over 14%

• increase in bus/walk and cycle use rose from 10% in 2009 to 35%

• 80% of visitors travel under 12 miles to attend

• event services are retained from the local economy of Sussex

2)Waste improvements

4 general mixed waste sacs were streamed /  1000 visitors attending.

Waste streaming is now considered zero

3) Energy costs

- total event energy consumed = £12.25 consumption, a reduction including a seasonal variation from £18.25 previous autumn event.

a) Reduction of carbon footprint associated with exhibitors and visitors transport

c) Reduction of energy consumed at the venue

a) Visitors Transport

- car sharing improved from 4% of visitors car sharing to over 10%

- public transport use and increased walking/cycling/bus use up from 4% of visitors to over 10%

b) Waste Reduction

- reduction of printing and waste paper

a reduction achieved to 0.7 litre per person

c) Energy Consumption

- a total cost of energy consumed by the venue November 2009 Show

226KWh cst @ £8.387p = £18.95

Working towards 8091.ac.uk, the industry requirements for 2012, additionally, Brighton & Hove Business events  follow the ‘purple’ guide, the industry standards and regulations regarding Health & Safety matters at their events.
